The Piercing Truth

This is right from the dictionary and seems to describe Albuquerque, Berry and Schultz. Fascism (f ash ,izem) noun An authoritarian right wing system of government and/or social organization. (in general use) extreme right wing, authoritarian, chauvinistic and/or intolerant views or practices. Fascism tends to include a belief in the supremacy of one group over another, national, ethnic, especially social strata or monetarily; a contempt for democracy, an insistence on obedience to a powerful leader, and a strong demagogic approach. Now There is One

With five Democrats - four announced and one unannounced - running for Albuquerque's mayor, the large field was decidedly missing a Republican. Our Eyes tell us that now there is one - State Representative R. J. Berry.

The Eyes have it that the two term Republican Representative is set to announce his candidacy on 770 KKOB's Jim Villanucci Show later today. So far, it's an attractive field for a strong Republican candidate that already features a shotgun start of Democrats. We assume that the D field will be reduced by at least one (Rowe) and perhaps two (O'Malley or Cadigan). Rowe will have a hard time qualifying for public financing and the two Councilors while better known are generally targeting constituencies dominated by the two better known Democrat contenders.

If Berry remains the only Republican in the race and runs an aggressive campaign based on lower taxes, economic development, and a smaller city hall he could easily capture the 40% necessary to win the race without facing a runoff. The numbers are in his favor as long as there are 3 or more Democrats vying for the office.

The two candidates that are most likely to be hurt by Berry's inclusion in the non-partisan field are Councilor Cadigan and the Almighty Alcalde himself. Marty has always run as a conservative Democrat that appeals to the Republicans of the Northeast Heights. So far, Cadigan is duplicating the Alcalde's tactic hoping to take the middle away from the current occupant of the 11th floor.

Romero, O'Malley, and Rowe appeal to farther left constituencies and shouldn't be hurt by a Berry candidacy, but might do a great deal of damage to each other should the three remain in the race. It looks like the game's afoot and perhaps we finally have all of the party's represented.

Has Berry ever voted for the Richardson budgets or all the earmarks? Might be tough selling him as a "fiscal conservative" if he went along with the Santa Fe spending spree.

After reading the above post I laughed so hard I cried. J.R is what we desperately need for the city, less taxes, more jobs, and someone who cares about the city, not politicians who only cares about themselves. Anyone who has spent anytime around J.R knows he is humble and wants to make this city better then what we have now. You will hear soon all the reasons why he can’t win form people who want to keep the city in their control (are we really better off now, how about all the Millions the mayor has wasted off our tax dollars?). I for one will vote for him and thank you J.R. for giving me a really choose for once to vote for.

Rep. Berry would make a great Mayor, it’s about time we have a candidate from the people for the people!!! He would be outstanding for the city and the city could move forward in a positive manner for once . Vote Berry Mayor!!!!

i thought paul heh was running? whats the holdup paul?

Why is Berry's business listed as "Hispanic American" owned? Seems like he wanted to work the federal government for all the federal contracts he got.

Nice ethics.

Are you kidding, Paul Heh could'nt run himself out of a wet paper bag.

Don't stop there....apply your judgment to Martin Chavez and see what you get....

A self-pronounced conservative Republican running using taxpayer funded public campaign financing!?!?!?! Good start bud.

Good call on the left-leaning candidates sharing the same pool of voters.

What the Conservatives have to do (which we havent figured out yet on any level in years) is to have ONE solid candidate to pick up the 50% to 60% who won't turn left once the curtain closes on the voting booth.

(Not that voting booths have curtains anymore, just showing my advancing age)

That leaves 3,4 maybe 5 leftys sharing 50% of the vote.

But much like sub-prime mortgages, those of us who can see how simple the answer is aren't the dudes running campaigns.

Marty for Mayor. No one can beat him folks, and you all know it. What has Cadigan, Omalley, Romero, or Perry done for Albuquerque. I for one like Marty and know he is the reason Montano and Paseo were completed. Cadigan has done nothing for me on the WS. Marty for Mayor

I have heard some good things about this guy... Maybe he will end ABQ's corrupt city govt and fire all the Mayor's puppets.

Hmmm who else will put their name in the hat? Those who are going to run for any office they can so they don't have to drive a cab or do crime reporting for Channel 13? Why not create a lottery for the citizens of Albuquerque. Who ever has the winning numbers, gets to be Mayor. We would probably have better results.

Wow, so we actually have a GOP running mate in the mayoral election, which has always baffled me considering it’s a non-partisan election? It may work for the right for once! The dem vote will be split at least 4-6 ways (arrogance at its best) and the 1- GOP candidate getting the small, but only republican vote just might win. Maybe a good change, who knows? NM & Burque politics at it’s best.

Such a sick system, but if a person chooses to live here (native or not) I suppose we just have to tolerate the system. Go, vote no matter what, than get sick as hell when they pull out the poker cards to decide who the next leader is.

GOP - George Bush and the mess he left the country in. Domenici under investigation. GOP use to stand for something good. Their best days are over. Mainly these days, alot of lies.

All politicians are liars! Donkey or Elephant, poor animals need to be associated with politics.

DEBRA JAMES FOR MAYOR!

She’d be a good candidate. She must get up in the morning, look in the mirror and say “mirror, mirror on the wall who’s the fairest of them all”. Then she goes to her closet and picks out the scankiest 80’s outfit that she has. I’ll never forget the black thong underwear with the white see-through pants. Unfortunately I recall because it was so gross. Now on the right young thang it might have looked good.

From what I have read and heard from others who know him, Berry seems like an excellent moderate candidate, someone willing to work with others towards compromise rather than being confrontational. As far as being publicly financed, if the alternative is elected officials who are bought and paid for by special interests, I guess I'll take the former. And to the commentor asking why his business is listed as Hispanic owned, it's because his wife is co-owner and I believe her maiden name is Medina.

Marty for Mayor? Marty you can vote for yourself if you want, just don't pretend your someone else blogging in support of yourself. By the way, when your out of office, are you still gonna go to Starbucks seeing how you won't have Police protection?

Marty needs to go, he has been in office too long and the longer he stays the more the corruption issues surface. The Sunport issue of several years ago comes to mind and now the Bode Aviations problem surfaces. What is next from this man. We simply need new blood be it Democrat or Republican, that is unless you want to pay for the Snobhill Rail that most will never ride.
