Odd things happen sometimes. Things that leave you scratching your head. Last week Valley Area Commander Rae Mason had to undergo an emergency appendectomy. That's not strange things like this happen and we wish Commander Mason a speedy recover.
What's strange is that despite having four lieutenants available to fill in for the ailing Mason, our Eyes tell us that The 5th Floor chose a junior Sergeant. Until Commander Mason is back on her feet Sergeant Joe Escquibel will be in charge.
So, I'm sure you're wondering... what's wrong with that? No disrespect to Sergeant Escquibel, but sergeants - particularly inexperienced sergeants - could create a few problems should events in the area overtake their ability and experience. One of our Eyes behind the badge was concerned that a Sergeant wouldn't be ready handle situations like an officer involved shooting. Commanders must take charge of the scene and direct how the investigation develops. Any mistake could result in serious legal consequences.
There's another more subtle problem. Until Commander Mason returns Sergeant Escquibel becomes his supervisor's supervisor. Once the Commander returns the sergeant will be supervised once again by a lieutenant that the day before he was supervising. Confusing huh?
Hopefully, Mason's recovery will go quickly and nothing serious will rock the Valley Area Command. But until then, the sarge is in charge.

Say What??? Four lieutenants are available but a sergeant is put in charge. Is this APD logic? Are the lieutenants that incompetent or do they just lack the "huevos" for the job? In any case I would like to hear the explanation for the selectiion.
Hey EYE you got it all wrong. Just because you have rank doesn’t mean you can lead. Take a look around APD and see for you self all of the incompetent so called leaders. Just look at the Chief, he is the highest ranking person on this department and he is a douche bag with no honor or integrity. I think Sgt Joe Escquibel will be just as good as Commander Mason if not better.

I believe it's Esquibel but that's besides the point Joe's good people and is one of the many retiring very soon. The logic with APD is that there is no LOGIC! A poster above had it exactly correct about rank and leadership...Mason may have the rank but she and the day lietenant sure as shit ain't leaders.
Sgt. Esquibel is far from inexperienced! Besides being one of the better (not most popular) sergeants, he is fair. Not unqualified at all to take care of business!
Esquibel is suited to lead. He's a good Sgt and good leader. I agree that is bs that they put him in charge and not a Lt. What the hell's wrong with the chief. Seems he's loosing his mind more and more as time goes on.
Joe has done great job! We should have done this years ago.
Regardless of Joe's experience, the point still is that there are multiple LT.'s that should have been put into place, instead they picked a Sgt. What game is APD playing?
I retired several years back and Joe was a Sergeant then. He has to have been a Sergeant for at least 5 years. He has over 20 years as a police officer and that gives hm the skills to be the lead. I know Lt's and Commanders with 10-12 years that could not run a crime scene to save their lives. Joe will do just fine.

What about the fact that over at the crimelab they put Marc Adams as acting Commander while Paul Feist is on vacation? Adams is a civilian!! What a slap in the face to Lt. Miller
Buy picking a Sergeant; that tells you that the Chief has no confidence in his own APD leadership. I think this is very funny. At least that douche bag has done something right.
First off, Joe Escquibel has over 20 years on the job. The man is a great boss. He is not a junior sargent. He is a senior sargent. He has been a sargent for a long time. This department would be best served if a guy like Joe were a Commander. They picked the right man for the job. I am not going to put anyone down but the choice couldn't have been better. Like the post below says, Rank does not denote a leader. Anyone can study, and take that test. Hell, you can sue you way through the ranks these days. Anyone that knows Joe, has alot of respect for him as a man, and as a supervisor.
The only shame, is that a supervisor like Joe is so close to retirement. That is the problem. Real leaders on their way out.
This is an embarassment to the APD. For those of us who spent time in the military the idea of a sergeant being put in charge over a lieutenant is mind boggling (even if the sergeant actually runs things). Sure the sergeant has the experience and based on the comments, quite capable of leading but ....
I see a a discrimination complaint coming out of this, from a lieutenant.
I guess the APD promotes people to lieutenant without regard to leadership abilities. I don't know but maybe for police in general this is the norm.
Junior Sarge in charge? Joe Esquibel has been in the department for 20 years, and has handled more shooting incidents than most will ever see. He's a solid leader, and at 6'5, his presence commands respect. The article should have been titled "Large Sarge in Charge"
The crime rates in the valley are down since Joe took over and it really doesn't seem like he is even doing anything different then he used to. Heck he acts ike he is still just a sergeant, brilliant!!! If the Eye hadn't told me he was actually in charge I would have completey missed it lol

I hope to hell this story is incorrect. If it is,the Chief,(Darren White) have failed to grasp the concept of Chain of Command. If in fact there are four Lt's. that could have stepped up and and were passed over by the Chief (DW)then they need to be fired as incompetent.
The Mayor needs to abolish Darren White's position can you imagine being Chief and having Darren show up wearing his vest that says "police". Who is running the show. The position is nothing more than political payoff.

Joe is a great leader!!!! You ask why didn't Mason put a Lt in charge, well maybe they didn't want to take charge you should know by now the city says there is no $$$$$ there is no pay upgrade so maybe that is why they don't want the job. If they did get the up grade pay I bet they would of jumped at it. Its a man and a supervisor like Joe to step up to the plate and handle anything that comes his way with no up grade pay! Get over it he is a Good if not Great Supervisor and he for sure should get the up grade pay!!!!!

Get Your facts straight Joe was upgraded as acting commander for two days by DCOP because day shift Lt was off. So don't get so upset the truth is the truth. Joe did a great job for those two days.

First of all, I DID have to go to the hospital with a ruptured appendix last Thursday. That is the only thing even close to accurate on your story. While sitting in the hospital waiting for surgery, I contacted LIEUTENANT GONTERMAN to advise him I would be down and out and he would be in charge until I got back. Why would you think AND THEN REPORT that I would upgrade a
Sergeant to "Acting Commander" in my absence???? That is not only ridiculous but inaccurate.... I appreciate the well wishes but wish it wasnt attached to such an inaccurate story!

I think the eye reported the 5th floor upgraded the Sergeant to Acting Commander not the Commander from the Valley. As far as I know the 5th floor did upgrade Sergent Esquibel.

I wonder how much Heather was involved in. I mean what detective in their right mind would move in with a guy who was suspected of murdering his wife? Then marry the guy weeks after her divorce was final? Seems to me like she has stuff to hide.
