The story that the Eye offers today are truly “shocking to the conscience,” that is if you have one. Three Strikes and you’re out! Just when you thought there were no other “Ray Schultz skeletons in the closet,” something new shows up and sickens you to the core. How can a leadership that prides itself with talk of ethics, morals, and integrity revert to complete contradictory? Our eyes have seen many things in this current administration that makes many ask, why are they still here? As you read more, even the “blind” will open their eyes and you will start to ask the same. The terrorist type leadership in this administration will try every possible technique to place blame on someone else.
During Brad Ahrensfield’s trial, the jury was sitting in the jury room, waiting to continue the trial. Cameras, as always, were set up throughout the courtroom, recording everything that was happening. As the eyes have heard, Prosecutor Terra Neva starts talking to the judge about several incidents from Ahrensfield’s internal affairs file that had been documented and allegedly sustained. Ahrensfield is referred to as a sexual offender, an officer who beats people, and an officer who has violated citizen’s rights. All of which has been documented and again, allegedly sustained. Mr. Bowles objects and council is summoned into the judge’s chambers. Mr. Bowles immediately tells the judge that the outrageous allegations and complaints were not sustained. “Where’s the I.A. proof?” asks the judge. This has completely caught Ahrensfield and Mr. Bowles off guard. Instead of providing the I.A. card which they did not have immediately at the time, they called T. Zane Reeves, PhD from the judge’s office. Dr. Reeves acts as an ombudsman at hearings involving City employees. Dr. Reeves conducted the hearing on Ahrensfield and investigated each and every charge brought against Ahrensfield, interviewing 28 people (19 for the city and 9 for Ahrensfield). Dr. Reeves was asked if he remembered the case. Not only did he remember the case, he remembered that Ahrensfield was exonerated on all charges and no sustained charges remained in his file. The people interviewed were from all professions, all wakes of life. APD personnel, AFD personnel, healthcare workers, polygraph administrators, Independent review officers, complainants, etc.
Dr. Reeves gave the following recommendations:
“The Personnel Hearing Officer recommends to the Personnel Board that the discharge of the Grievant be dismissed and that he be reinstated to his position as a Patrolman First Class. Accordingly, the Grievant should be awarded full back pay, benefits, and seniority. All references to his discharge should be removed from his personnel file.”
The Retention File Index of Ahrensfield that was presented to the court, certainly painted a slanderous picture. The Retention File Index lists at least four separate I.A. case numbers. Why aren’t they in chronological order? Why isn’t the card the corrected one that remained a part of Ahrensfield’s employment and final disposition showing him exonerated? Why were Dr. Reeves’ recommendations not presented to the court? Who supplied this slanderous incorrect index file to the court that was presented to the judge and ultimately media? Why did this file show sustained charges, when in fact they were exonerated and Ahrensfield was reinstated with full compensation and consideration? The Chief of Police (Ray Schultz) is the only one authorized to release internal affairs files. Was that the case in this instance, and if not who was it and why did they deviate from conduction business honestly and professionally? The judge did not allow any testimony on this matter to be presented to the jury. However, damage had already been incurred. That night, the news and other various media resources tagged Ahrensfield as a sexual offender, as an officer who beat people and violated their rights. The slander and libel had already been discharged.
The whole world was able to witness the travesty and the injustice that was brought upon Ahrensfield. The parents of Ahrensfield, who were unaware of his troubles found out through the news. Ahrensfield’s fathers’ health quickly deteriorated and sadly he passed. Ahrensfield’s mother had several heart attacks. This was so much more than deceit to the court; this was a personal attack on Ahrensfield and his family.
Using deception and intimidation is common practice to the upper administration, particularly Chief Schultz, of the Albuquerque Police Department. Sam Costales filed a lawsuit for the intimidation he received after testifying in the Unser trial, in which Unser was found not guilty. Costales was eventually paid nearly one million dollars for the intimidation and harassment he received by the Chief’s hands. Chief Ray Schultz was found personally by a Federal Civil Jury to have violated Mr. Costales's civil rights. The Eyes behind the badge have told us that Chief Schultz was very upset over Ahrensfield’s testimony in the Orlando Camacho trial, which lead to Camacho’s acquittal. Our Eyes behind the badge also tell us that Chief Schultz intentionally delayed Ahrensfield’s transfer to the academy, which had already been approved. He wanted to make Ahrensfield feel uneasy and tormented. If this is true, he definitely surpassed his desires; Ahrensfield was uneasy and tormented and things only got worse. These actions stink of retaliation and vengeance. It is these types of actions that “stain the badge.”
This made Our Eyes wonder why all the top command structure involved in the Ahrensfield case suddenly retired. We all know that you can run but you can’t hide.
At what point will the eyes of everyone be completely open to the deceit, intimidation, and retaliation that is so prevalent in the administration? How can officers be held to higher standards when the so called leaders are not? At what point will those that have committed so many strikes be “removed”?
From watching this case unfold, if you’re a City employee at any level, you should get a copy your employee file and/or internal affairs file. It appears the City does not always play by the rules or fairly. Who knows who may be next!
Well Chief Schultz; What does disgust a Federal Civil Jury the most?
