Until 1927, there really was only one form of immigration - legal. Those were the heady days of "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." The doors through which most immigrants passed were held wide open just like the American West where many risked life and limb in order to find a new life - a free life.
These immigrants may have passed through Ellis Island, crossed over an imaginary desert line in the sand, or fled the Great White North of Canada (eh), but they all came here understanding that nothing was guaranteed and that they would have to largely take care of themselves.
FDR's New Deal began an inevitable march toward government dependence that added a new and dangerous incentive to immigrate to the US - entitlement. Social programs designed as a safety net became a staple and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free became the masses looking for free things.
Don't misunderstand, there are those hardworking immigrants who only want an opportunity to better themselves and provide a better life for their family. The difference today is entitlement. Regardless of an immigrant's motives, their very presence here makes them eligible for all sorts of government goodies paid for by citizens and legal immigrants. Enter the new Arizona immigration law.
Arizona is broke. So broke in fact, that the state held an auction in January to sell off government buildings (read it here). It's estimated that Arizona is home to some 470,000 illegal immigrants - all of whom are eligible for some form of state funded assistance despite their less than legal status. Then there's the crime that is often associated with illegal immigrants. Phoenix has become the kidnap capital of the U.S. It's hard not to draw a correlation between the abductions in Arizona and the kidnappings in the Kidnap Capital of the World - Mexico City.
There's little doubt that crime and entitlement led to the new Arizona law - a law that is more rhetorically reprehensible than actually a threat to civil liberties. In fact, the law has at least one very positive effect - it makes Arizona immigration policy uniform.
Uniformity in law enforcement is imminently desirable. In Bernalillo County alone we have at least two different enforcement policies - one for the Sheriff's Department and one for the Albuquerque Police Department. And despite the mayoral campaign promises, our Eyes tell us that there has been no change to the APD SOP regarding illegal immigrants. Officers are prohibited from contacting federal authorities unless the suspected illegal is accused of a violent crime (read it here).
[Sidebar]Look... everyone in this country - including American Indians - came from somewhere else. Whether trekking across the Bering Strait, braving the Atlantic, or wading across the Rio Grande, all of us are or came from immigrant stock. Most of us came legally. But since 1927 the federal government has restricted immigration and if they won't enforce the laws they created, it's up to the states to do so. More importantly, in today's entitlement society it's economically unsustainable to continue to support those who have chosen to ignore our laws and enter this country illegally.
We understand that filling a $20 MILLION budget hole only to have to fill a $64 MILLION hole takes a large shovel and a lot of time. But, Mayor Berry needs to make good on his campaign promise and direct Uber-Chief White and Chief Schultz to make the promised adjustments to the APD SOP.

Berry is too much of a chicken shit to keep his word and change the Sanctuary City policy.
Let me put that a different way.
Mayor Chicken Shit ran as a tough guy Republican who would change Sanctuary City then the second he was elected appointed hyper-liberal Democrat David Campbell as CAO and all of sudden it was OK for Albuquerque to be a Sanctuary City.
Pray all you want to for the cameras, RJ. You're a fraud and a liar. More and more of us are figuring that out about you every single day.
Well once again EYE you are back on the right track. ALL I can say my hat if off to the Governor of Arizona for having the courage to stand up and say enough is enough. I also must say look out New Mexico. Now that Arizona has taken a stand I believe the illegal immigrants will increase by huge numbers in New Mexico. This is not about race as the liberal press would have you believe, it is about enforcing immigration laws. I will use just one example. I am in court almost everyday. You may have read about that in the Journal April 10 2010. THIS is what I see . AN illegal is brought before the court for a crime. Next to that illegal is their court appointed attorney and their court appointed interpreter. Guess who is paying for that , YOU ARE! Then you have the judge warning the illegal that if they plea guilty it may effect their immigration status. WHAT IMMIGRATION STATUS THEY ARE IN THE UNITED STATES ILLEGALLY. We also pay for their health care and to educate their children. Arizona cant afford it and New Mexico sure can not afford it. The liberal press keeps this race issue going not the citizens of this country and not the good people of this state. The politicians better wake up and in a hurry we will be bankrupt unless changes are made. I am all for legal immegration . I work with people who struggle with english, their first langue being spanish. I am proud of them, they had a dream and obtained that dream the right way. Oh and by the way they are smarter than me. They have learned english and try as I have I have not been able to learn spanish. The politicians may take notice the majority of the country wants immigration laws enforced. I am all for guest worker permits, but no welfare programs along with thoes permits, the country can't afford it. WE are in red ink over our heads. It has to stop. " A NATION CEASES TO BE REPUBLICAN ONLY WHEN THE WILL OF THE MAJORITY CEASES TO BE THE LAW " (THOMAS JEFFERSON )
I lived in Sierra Vista, AZ about ten years ago. That experience changed by attitude regarding illegals. The area around SV was being overrun even back then. The desert areas around the city had become trash heaps of plastic bottles, trash bags and clothing. It was also unsafe requiring caring a weapon necessary. The ranchers in the area where especially up in arms, their cattle running loose because of illegals leaving gates open. What many don't know is the level of organization running these operations including Americans who traveled the highways with two-way radios to keep an eye on "la migra" and their whereabouts. Even had car carriers running down dirt roads in the back country returning vehicles used for smuggling. I support Arizona's move to run them out. GO ARIZONA. NM take note.
"The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first."
----Thomas Jefferson
"Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law,' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual."
----Thomas Jefferson
The argument for stronger or more strictly enforced immigration laws would be more convincing if the major proponents weren't also totally against an expansion of such relatively small quotas.
Ten million people came here looking for work, and most of them found it. Ten million people needed housing and other necessities, and they spend the same money you and I do. Remove them and watch as rents and property values plummet, landlords go bankrupt, and price levels fall as demand decreases.... except for prices for food, as labor costs soar.
And all those illegitimate dollars currently entering the Social Security system - from people with fake numbers and no hope of recollecting a dime - will disappear as well. So, if you're living on SS, plan on sweating a lot more as the fund is drained faster.
I don't have a nanny or gardener or in-home healthcare provider, but if you do, plan on spending a lot more... while the failing economy undermines your job security.
Face it... anti-immigrant proponents haven't thought this whole thing out. They're typically the same armchair yahoos who sing along to the Fox News Karaoke Machine every night, dependent on the collective dicta that passes for intelligence.
Today's criminal immigrant is tomorrow's legal immigrant, IF a realistic, fair, sensible change is made to our quotas.
By the way... in case you haven't noticed, it's all academic: There are plenty of legal hispanics in this country already, their percentage of the voting population is increasing, and it's already too late for the superiority-complexed whites to do a thing about it.
My advice to traditionalist anglos is make up your minds to learn how to live happily in a minority. Learning Spanish might help, but if you're too old or too proud, there will always be helpful, bilingual Latinos around to help translate for you.
Thanks Paul Heh once again you stand behind something you beleive in, and put your name behind it.
Eye ...
Keep drinking the cool-aid.
Until then, you can borrow my glasses to see the real world.
Whirlpool Corporation is shutting down a refrigerator plant in Evansville, Indiana that will put 1100 people out of work. Are they having trouble selling refrigerators in these bad economic times? No. Whirlpool is profitable and still selling plenty of refrigerators here. But they want to ship these jobs to Mexico where they can produce them cheaper and without having to respect U.S. labor and environmental regulations.
Whirlpool took $19 million in economic recovery money and now instead of helping our economy recover, it’s destroying 1100 good American jobs. The AFL-CIO has started an online petition drive telling Whirlpool to “Keep It Made In America” to save our jobs. You can find it at unionvoice.org/campaign/Evansville.
If Native Americans would have enforced Immigration, most of us wouldn't be here either.Funny how that work's. Point the finger at what you see before you but forget what has been done behind you..

While I agree with you on some points, undocumented workers are ILLEGAL. They entered illegally either by crossing without inspection or by over-staying their visa. Regardless, they are law breakers. Arizona is only giving thier local enforcement officers the power to do something about it. Have you been to Mexico? And I don't mean crossing into Juarez. If you drive south from any Mexican port of entry you will encounter a checkpoint where you must show documents for each person as well as your vehicle. They can take action but being tourist oriented they simply tell you to get them before proceeding (if you don't have them). Now once your past these checkpoints and your caught, its jail time or an expensive "propina" at a minimum. Ever travel to other countries? The police their will ask to see your passport (should you encounter them) even for a traffic infraction. Most countries of the world have some level of illegal immigration and their police are active in rooting them out.
While immigrants do pay taxes, etc at some level, it's typically minimal, especially considering many work for cash, which they save and send home. One trip to the emergency room easily wipes out any taxes paid.
While I do support a temporary worker visa program (much more extensive than we currenty have), I also support tough border security and vigorous internal enforcement.
As a footnote, many, many illegals are from Europe, Asia and other places that come to America as tourists/students and never leave.
First of all - I have been in NM longer than most of you who blog here. Why should I be subjected to some idiot cop who decides he wants to check my "papers" because he can. If you think Arizona is broke now let the lawsuits begin. As an American (for generations) I would not submit or cooperate with that type of questioning - unless all the people who look like Tim McVeigh carry papers to prove their status. We see how corrupt APD is now (Darren/Ray) and we expect them to not racial profile. Yeah right!!
Paul Heh - this time I don't agree with you. If you want the illegals out of here go after the contractors that hire them. I bet most of you cops live on the west side - did you not notice that most of the workers building your new house spoke only Mexican. You see you are part of the problem because you bought that house from a greedy contractor who doesn't want to pay fair wages to American workers, so shut the hell up!!!
I support Arizona and I think Paul Heh should be Mayor...why not take Richardson's place.
Im tired of my money going to illegals and Im tired of Berry and his cronies.
GO ARIZONA!! GO PAUL!!!!
I would say that the illegals are racist and want hand outs. While the american people work hard they get ebt cards and food stamps. Oh I forgot they also get free rent!! They cost our state millions of dollars we cannot afford. They send there money back to Mexico and reap all our benefits.
Nutless !!!
Until the bleeding hearts and pussy liberals like Campbell are a victim of these illegal drug dealing POS, nothing will change. As for Berry; he's just as bad. Keep listening to the a-holes you have been talked into hiring . This city will soon be run over by drug dealers mayor. Then what will you do.? Starting touting that tough guy shit about ending Sanctuary City again. Grow a set and stick by what you ran on and got elected to do. Jan Brewer has a bigger set than you.
I say throw them all in the ovens!!!!
The mayoral candidates that ran in the recent election where all warned.
"WHOEVER IS THE NEXT MAYOR WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION PROBLEM, IN CONJUNCTION WITH DRUGS, MURDER, KIDNAPPING". NOW THAT ARIZONA IS NO LONGER GOING TO TOLERATE THIS ANYMORE, GUESS WHERE THEY WILL COME TO.YOU GUESSED IT; NEW MEXICO.
WE HAVE OBVIOUSLY A WEAK GOVERNOR, AND NOW A WEAK MAYOR. ARE YOU PREPARED MR. BERRY?
YOU BETTER GET A BETTER TEAM PUT TOGETHER INSTEAD OF DARREN, RAY & FAIRY CAMPBELL IF YOU CAN'T STAND UP AND KEEP YOUR WORD ABOUT THIS SANCTUARY CITY CRAP.
Just use the exact same laws that Mexico uses. Problem solved!!
Americans do not have to carry papers showing they are "American". All they (police or immigration officials) can do is ask, just like the border patrol does. If they are suspicious then they will ask more questions. The border patrol and immigration have access to computer data bases which allow verification IF the person became naturalized or is in the US on a visa. But if they were born here, there is no verification system. Lying about being an American is considered a serious charge (false claim to US citizenship) and is grounds for removal and requires seeing an immigration judge for adjudication. Even a person who is here legally can be removed if they vote or otherwise claim to be a US citizen.
You all bitch about losing your freedoms, but don't seem to care when it infringes on another persons freedom. I refuse to have white people think it's ok for a cop to pull me over because I am brown. If you don't want illegals here go after those who hire them and then pay the price for the services that the illegals once provided. I say bring it on and I will sue anyone who violates my civil rights and you bigot taxpayers can pick up the tab.
Drug dealers do not fear you mayor
What happened to the Sanctuary city policy Mayor? Why did you back down from eliminating that like you said you would during your campaign?
What about the red light camera program, and what's with councilor sanchezes letter to the state saying Albuquerque can't do without the revenues at the state road locations.
SO.... It really is about the money, not public safety.
Just saying. ONCE AGAIN.!!!
I just finished reading an article on the front page on the New Mexico Business Weekly ref: Arizona's new immigration law.
What struck me as odd is how journalists, pundits, etc. tend view the enactment of this law mostly as a loss of tourism dollars issue rather that a CRIME issue.
Why are politicians more concerned about loss of state revenues rather than the amount of property and drug crimes which will be prevented as a result of this GOOD LAW. The one will balance out the other, you know.
Also, the statements made in that article by Santa Fe's Mayor were really scary. He wants to welcome all illegals with open arms. That is, until they cut them off with a machete. Right? For sure Santa Fe will begin to look like Juarez.
Bring back Mayor Marty!!
May 9 4:10
Save the drama for your mama. Maybe they should send you back to where you came from and take your GOOD LAW with you. Sorry, but minorities are here to stay, so get used to it or LEAVE!!! In fact, we were here before you!
How can a human being be illegal?
