Records... they're the bane of just about everyone's existence but an essential part of law enforcement. Without records and reports, officers would find it almost impossible to truthfully testify - forgetting details or even confusing cases. Believe it or not, most officers spend a lot of time in court testifying. Without accurate records event the most experienced DA would have a difficult time convicting anyone.
As we told you back in January, the Albuquerque Police Department's records department is behind - way behind. And despite forced overtime, the folks over at records can't seem to catch up. Much of the delay seems to be due to the new data entry system affectionately known as Crapperfire (officially known as Copperfire).
Back in January we told you that the delays were problematic, evidence was getting separated from reports and that 229 reports had simply disappeared. More recently our Eyes tell us that supervisors have been seeing reports rejected for corrections only to find that the required correction had been made over a year prior but hadn't been recorded yet.
Most concerning is that the system has now lost considerably more than 229 reports. Our Eyes tell us that somewhere around 10,000 reports are simply gone. The 5th Floor is asking officers to re-write the reports but officers are refusing to do so.
Now before you go and think that they're just being difficult, understand a significant amount of time has passed since many of these reports were originally written. Officers must testify under oath to the accuracy of their reports and will base their testimony on those same reports. If an officer is attempting to re-create a police report even a few months later, it's likely that many of the details would be lost. As a result, officers could not truthfully testify to the events in question and cases would be dismissed. It's even possible that officers could be sanctioned or charged with perjury.
Copperfire appears to have been a bad choice made worse by poor implementation, under staffing, and bad training. It seems as if the hole being dug by Crapperfire is getting deeper. We don't quite know how to get APD out of this and away from all of these broken records, but the first thing to do when you've found yourself in a hole is to stop digging.

The mismanagement at APD is beyond all reason. Rather than admit to a mistake, they will continue down the same dark road costing taxpayers more and more cash. One has to ask why ? The question has to be asked, who got the kickback!? The Red lIGHT CAMERA program is another example of WHO GOT THE KICKBACK ? For all of you song witer out there you ought to write a song: TITLE ALBUQUERQUE WHO GOT THE KICKBACK .
Most officers are smart enough to down load a copy of their report and are told to due so and just fyi its just transfering to a hard copy when you down load a copy off of copperfire you can not make corrections to your copy so it is a copy off of the original! GET YOUR INFORMATION CORRECT BEFORE YOU TALK OR SEND BS OUT TO THE PUBLIC.
Mismanagement on APD, Say it isn’t so. Just another example of the lack of leadership within the police department. Management was told that this system was no good but somebody got a kick back so they pushed for the system anyway. They want officers to make copies of their reports but doesn’t that defeat the paperless system. They should scrap the system and start over. This time allow the field officer to have some input into how the system should work. They are the one writing the reports anyway. It’s not Rocket Science folks.
Its not all entirely copperfire...its mismanagement from the Records Manager who has no idea how to manage, organize and cheer people on to help them succeed in their jobs so everyone in records is burnt out. Let's really look at the problem. Last time I mentioned this, my comment was not posted..and no I do not work in records..
If you don't work in Records, then how can you accuse the Records Manager of mismanagement?
APD - strikes again. But isn't it nice to have a union that protects imcompetence. Besides getting rid of the the top dogs we need to get rid of the union too.
I'm sure there was a kickback somewhere but all one has to do is audit the money trail - if you can get your hands on the documents. Probably been shredded. Same goes for the new handguns and badges. The ABQ city government and police management are jokes, scum and/or crooks.
Oh it was a success for one of the retired cops (Atencio) who get a high paying job with the company who sold the system to the city
APD's crossfire system handles BCSO reports, too. There are all those lost reports to factor in to your numbers...
Why are you so angry. Why do you lie about paper being shredded. You have no clue. You need some anger management classes check it out. Classes will help you, don't be so angry it can cause health problems. RELAX!!!!
Okay, John Martinez, posting on this site will not start an uproar for the Union membership to side with you and the crappy options the city is trying to mandate for officers. Give us our payraise, we put our lives on the line every day. There should not be any city employee who works behind a desk that is paid more than someone who places their life on the line. And for all of you naysayers, a degree is great to hang on the wall but says absolutely nothing about the person's job potential or ability other then they paid someone to issue them a piece of paper. By the way, I do have have my degree, and no it is not a mail order one.
The community supports law enforcement! They have a tough job and no I do not want their job but they should be compensated for the crap they put up with and the stresses placed on their families!
I think all the reports read the same anyway _ "they crossed the middle line, they were speeding, it was after 10:00 at night, they had a strong smell of alcohol, blood shot glossy eyes, and slurred speech" _ Oh yea _ and they blew a 0.00 _ I think the judges already know what is contained in your reports _ I'll bet that over 50% of the population of our jails are full of everyday people who don't really have criminal minds!
I don't know where you got your degree, but I worked long and hard for mine. I totally agree and respect honest police and firefighters and do appreciate them putting their lives on the line. My brother was a cop and my dad a firefighter. However, statistically more construction workers die in the line of duty than either policemen or firefighters.
there are lot of problems that are alot worse in apd. this is like a breeze of fresh air compared to what really is going on.
"However, statistically more construction workers die in the line of duty than either policemen or firefighters."
Maybe it's the training, salary, or just the personal commitment...or all of the above that attract a different person to law enforcement vice being a construction worker. I'm pretty sure more cab drivers and convenient store clerks have a more stressful job then a construction worker or cop. The difference is they probably do not qualify to be a cop but do qualify to be a construction worker, they just do not like the labor aspect.
Break it down any way you like...a cop's job is dangerous because of personal dealings with the public. A construction workers job is dangerous due to safety issues on the work site.
Ok, that you have told us the difference between cops and construction workers, what was your point?
If you keep beating the same old drum that law enforcement is dangerous, it falls on deaf ears as Albuquerque cops are paid much higher than the average Albuquerque resident (average pay is $39,000 per year, APD after getting off probation pays over $50,000). So just how much more should we be paying cops? What is the number that you would be happy with?
Maybe it's the training.......
or lack there of. APD wouldn't be sued all the time if you were all so well trained. That includes your leadership...... or lack there of. Taxpayers have paid out millions this year because of the police (with all there training). To tell you the truth the quality of APD has deteriorated over the years. Most of you just go with the flow of the losers at the top, because you are too chicken sh** to stick up to them. When a cop does stick up to them the rest of you turn your back, as evidenced on this site. Looks like APD will let anyone in ie (the cop who raped the woman prisoner, Levi Chavez, etc.) How many of you came forward to help Tara's family? How many went to Los Lunas to contaminate the crime scene. How many of you supported your brother in blue - Sam Costales? I don't recall any of your training showing through in either case, when you can't even tell the TRUTH!
Looking at APDs city website it looks as if the records manager got employee of the week. I could be wrong.
"So just how much more should we be paying cops? What is the number that you would be happy with?"
You're so fucking stupid it's almost not worth responding to but I am so other can read. What number are we happy with? The number that attracts QUALIFIED candidates. A lot of effort and time was put in place to get to that number (outside experts and academics...) and Buck Ferry is just going to cast it aside.
Well done Ferry, you suck!

That was the perfect, I am a union member and want it all response. Give us a dollar figure so you can attract a QUALIFIED candidate. You don't sound like a very smart person so I doubt we get one. So go back to your mirror and scream profanities at it, it will make you feel like a big man / woman.
When you want to honestly debate this, take a dose of grow up and come back.
There is no specific dollar figure moron; why are you so naive in assuming there is one?
The amount of money the police should be payed is the amount they were promised in their contract. A contract is a binding agreement. It is enforceable in court. When it goes to the supreme court, they will see the end of corrupt bully practices like forcing a contract down people's throat after one was already agreed upon. Maybe it won't be so funny when everyone gets back pay for the mayor's illegal labor practices. This is the 21st century in the United States. You can't arbitrarily take pay away at whim and do what you like to people who have worked for what they have. And the jealous crybabies out there should remember that. Instead of crying about what everyone else has and pointing the finger, maybe they should grow a fucking set, stand up and fight for themselves. All you hear here is punks crying about how everyone has more then them, OR "if they get this, WE better get it too." If you don't like it, Go through the fucking academy and earn it. 99% of you complainers would wash the fuck out. What a bunch of babies. Pay me now OR pay me later! That's the way I see it. Just think how much everyone is going to cry when they see how much has to be paid out when the APOA lawsuit is ruled on, and back pay is the order of the day.
They could try to move all workers to minimum wage - look at California. That is totally not fair! People need to fight back and I hope all your Unions do exactly that. Enough with greedy management & corruption. Without that cost, they wouldn't be broke. Look at the head of your HR. Oh believe me - talk about corrupt. I wonder what Gene Moser is paid. These are probably all his ideas. They didn't hire that piece of shit for nothing.
APD Records is on life support. For the past 15 years morons and fairies have run the central records system for APD. Its the blind leading the blind. It only progressively gets worse and more worse. Patty French is a Moron, a kid in a candy store! I'm sure it was fun while it lasted. As for her replacements, you'll all rot in hell for what you've done! It all comes around!
