The Piercing Truth

This is right from the dictionary and seems to describe Albuquerque, Berry and Schultz. Fascism (f ash ,izem) noun An authoritarian right wing system of government and/or social organization. (in general use) extreme right wing, authoritarian, chauvinistic and/or intolerant views or practices. Fascism tends to include a belief in the supremacy of one group over another, national, ethnic, especially social strata or monetarily; a contempt for democracy, an insistence on obedience to a powerful leader, and a strong demagogic approach. Terrible Job

Chief Schultz has never done well with Eye readers and last week's Eye Poll was no exception. 70% of readers felt that the unpopular chief doing either a not so good job or a terrible job, while only 20% felt he was doing either a good or excellent job. Those are not the kind of numbers that any politician or government official would like to see if they plan on staying in their job.

In our unscientific poll of 359 people, 13% felt the chief was doing an excellent job, 7% a good job, 8% a fair job, 13% a not so good job, 1% didn't know, and a whopping 53% thought that the chief was doing a terrible job (view the results here).

This week we take another look at the race for district attorney. There have been a lot of stories lately on the activities of incumbent DA Kari Brandenburg. We have a hard time believing that Torroco could improve upon the 70% that she received earlier, but most of the publicity hasn't been exactly flattering for Brandenburg (or her stuffed animals). But one thing is sure, the DA's race is now receiving the attention that it deserves. Don't forget to vote!

Chief you are doing a great job. Keep up the battle. Good, will prevail. You can never make everyone happy, but the majority of us, the real rank and file do support you....and Kari too.

Chief Schultz only cares about himself and it's very apparent!

It's sad, but Chief Schultz does not even appriciate the men and women that risk their lives to make him look good. The only thing Schultz is interested in, is how much money he can make before he leaves Albuquerque! He treats the officers like sh@t!

Anonymous said...

And this surprises you?? The only problem is that none of the people that voted will do anything other than a "non-scientific poll".

There will always be people unhappy with their boss but this is alarming. I would like to know why the major media hasn't got their hands on this story. Channel 4 hates cops so I assumed they would jump all over the chief "not caring".

There are ways to get pressure on the mayor to do something about this chief. I know he is handpicked but there has to be a way to make the city change it's charter to make the position elected.

Too many good cops are working too hard to protect this city and it's citizens. Now all I see are burned out cops working way too hard for a chief and administration that OBVIOUSLY cares nothing about his officers or the citizens of this city.

No one of the "real rank and file" support Chief Schultz! He has done a horrible job. All he cares about is his spot on Marty's lap! Lip service is paid by him to the officers of this department. Complete lack of leadership and no integrity whatsoever.

Anonymous said...

It's too bad that the chief does not take the advise of the special speakers he brings into our management meetings. The speakers have loads of great information for improving the dept. The bad thing is that this chief has not once used any of the great informationthey provide. However, he does makes us all listen to it. Chief, practice what you preach!

It's too bad he does not, as the info in very good. The chief usually is way off base of what these leaders of the future are preaching, in terms of management.

Our chief is still in the 1980's way of policing. He needs to jump about 25 years into the future and leave his 1980's management style behind. Chief, please wake up and smell the coffee, you're killin your officers morale!

Anonymous said...

Sounds as if DC Castro is posting for shultz again. His post are so easy to spot. The DC does not even like shultz and thinks he dumb and is screwing up morale. The DC operates best as a two face. He will say one thing to your face, but talk about you behind your back. Ask SWAT! Even though I think shultz is a bad Chief of Police, he better watch his back with some of his staff who want his job and are working hard trying to get it.

Anonymous said...

Don't worry bout a thing Chief the REAL WORKING OFFICERS have your back.

Only the lazy disgruntled ones who forgot who they REALLY work for are complaining.

Thank you ABQ for your faith in the real officers who have not forgot our true priorities.

This is for Mr. Anonymous poster. For your information and the rest of the readers of this post, I do in fact like Chief Schultz. More important, I respect Chief Schultz. In my opinion he has been the most progressive and yes, intelligent Chief we have had in my 24 plus years in this organization. If for whatever reason you believe that I have said one thing to your face and then another behind your back; my door is always open. I will wait, but I am certain you will never come. As for me, I will ask SWAT. If they feel that I have wronged them they at least will be man enough to tell me. Oh, one more thing. I have no desire to ever be Police Chief. The only hard work I am doing is working to make my department the best. How about you?

Anonymous said...

Hey 6:20 poster what a complete idiot you are. I was there at the meeting today and what Ms Rhodes was talking about was YOU taking value centered leadership and applying it to your team/squad/area command. The Chief and DC;s do it everyday, you should too. If you can not do the job quit. That is your option dont bring the entire organization down because you are a poor manager. If you listened to her which obviously you did not, what she was saying is that you can make a difference even if our bosses dont you can. I am not a suck up but I know that this is a great department and has many great people. It is just a few, a very small minority who hate everything, the department, the chief and the mayor. Be apart of the solution or as Ms Rhodes said leave. No one is forcing you to work here! You will not quit you know that you have it good and that no one else will hire you. If this department was so bad why have so many officers come back?????? I think over 100. They came back because things are again as Ms Rhodes said "Great" so stop your complaining and either get to work or do us all a favor quit and move away.

We need a better Chief, one that cares about the community and the officers!

Anonymous said...

It would be nice to have a chief who put the interest of the APD, Officers, and Citizens before his own self interest. Chief Schultz is only looking after himself.

Example, the morale is at an all time low and officer's have no confidence or trust in Chief Schultz. The Chief also controls the APD Union through fear and intimidation, so they will not rise up against him. The retired Captains used to keep him in check, but now they are all gone and he has now taken the new ones out of the union so they are powerless against him, as well as scared to death of him.

There are not enough officers on the street to take calls for service even though Chief Schultz says we have plenty. We have acting supervisors everywhere. Where are all the officers he claims to have hired???????????

Many days we go into service with only a hand full of officers for our entire area command. If the citizens only knew, they would freak! However, Chief Schultz controls the media, especially TJ Wilham.

Anonymous said...

To the poster at 7:25 pm on the 15th, us "REAL WORKING OFFICERS" do not support Chief Schultz! We are tired of "Continually Doing Our Job Without The Support OF The Chief!!!!!!!!!" Maybe you should ask around at briefings and on calls about the feelings of " REAL WORKING OFFICERS." You might learn something useful!!

Anonymous said...

Hey DC, and other kiss a@$es I was also at that mgt meeting and the way I understood it, she said that top management MUST set the tone and lead by example! Seems to be very consistent with other mgt thories that have been taught throughout the years!!!! You know, LEAD BY EXAMPLE! Something this current 5th floor or previous 5th floors has never done in a very long time.

Chief Galvin was the last to treat the troops well and was not a liar. His style may have been different, but he did not lie, muchless tolerate dirty corrupt cops, especially at the top!

The best thing was he respected his officers and was always out eating or taking calls with them. He was not arrogant and he cared about the future of the dept, even as an outsider.

Remember you old timers at the top. Morale and attitude are a reflection of top management, any village idiot knows that! well, maybe not this 5th floor. If the top is bad, others will follow.

Seems if we want a new chief, we need to elect a new mayor who will get rid of our current excuse of a chief and his staff!

Anonymous said...

The 5th floor lead by example......Who are you kidding those guy violate cops right every day. The chief could give a shit about APD or its people.

By the way, who is the school officer at Highland H.S Where where they when all these auto thefts were happening???????? If you are going to put officers in schools, make sure they put some time there.

Anonymous said...

First post, "Chief Keep up the battle" I did not know there was an internal battle within the APD. Seems like there is a whole lot of infighting with this Police administration and it's personnel!

This worries me deeply as a tax payer!

Mayor Chavez, get control of your police force! It seems as though things are out of control from what I have been reading!!!!

When you look at the number of retirments compared to the number of retired rehires back on the job it is a very small percentage. Those that do come back do so for a couple of reasons, first they don't think they can do anything else. Second, they are offered a sweetheart position where they don't have to do anything but show up and sit behind a desk. Third, they are in so much debt they can't see any other way out. Fourth, a small, very small group that just wanted to come back. I can count the number of officers in the fourth group on one hand. These guys work the field and are HAPPY. There are not many of them.

With the current economy and people being laid off right and left, I would look for the rehire law to go away soon. Government needs to provide jobs for out of work people. This isn't a cop issue, about 90% of all retired rehires are bean counters that are friends of Marty and Bill. These folks are knocking down 6 figures each year (between retirement pay and their job). They are in high positions which creat a glass ceiling to all other employees.

Repeal the retire rehire bill!

Anonymous said...

The Detective at Highland High School is one of those guys that got a sweetheart deal because he is the chief's friend. Other better qualified guys were not hired, but this guy was. Where was he when all those auto thefts were occurring, eating with the chief I'll bet.

Anonymous said...

Last post, your are correct! Most come back because they enter the private sector and find they now have to work for a living. Wow, what a shock it must be for them, especially the really lazy ones that came back. Why on earth would this chief hire those old moss backs back. They didn't work when they were here the first time, just bitched, and could not wait to get out of here. Now there all back! . Others have no skills and can't do anything else.

However, there are a few good ones that came back and are in the FIELD, taking calls for service. Those are the ones we like and welcome back.

Oh yes, then there are the retired deputy chiefs. Come on guys, go get a life out of APD. You sucked when you were at the top, so just leave for gosh sakes! You're taking up good space. Now, the chief should have never rehired this bunch. Clearly, it shows the chiefs corrupt tendencies bringing those guys back.

Anonymous said...

If you look at how many rehires APD now has, which is over 100. One must wonder what would happen to the dept should the state do away with this program. If it was not for the rehires, Schultz would have never even got his numbers up a little, so give the rehires credit. Even though the numbers are not over 1000 like the chief lies, the rehires now make up a large portion of his dept, and without them his numbers would be in the mid 800s.

Anonymous said...

The Chief can't wait to get out of here. At least he will be appreciated when he joins Congressman White's team in Washington.

Anonymous said...

"If you look at how many rehires APD now has, which is over 100. One must wonder what would happen to the dept should the state do away with this program."

I don't know if the writer knows it but they made and excellant comment. So what would happen to APD if the retired rehire law is repealed? It is not and should never be PERA's problem. No department or agency should have based their hiring practices on something that they do not control (the legislature makes the laws). Government hiring problems should never be placed on the backs of our pensions. Just look at how much trouble PERA is having now. Our pension fund is just that; for our pensions.

Furthermore, there was never a hiring problem at APD or at any government agency. There are more than enough qualified people for these jobs. The real reason this law was passed was to create a golden parachute for well connencted government workers who are greedy and want to pad their retirements and paychecks on the backs of the unemployed and our pensions.

Example, the head engineer at the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy is making over $300,000 between his pension and his same job that he never left. How much is the retired old timer in the chiefs office, who sleeps at city wide briefings making? Well over 6 figures. Go all around the state and you will see city, county and state government retirees doubling their salaries to the tune of well over 6 figures while the normal worker in New Mexico is scared he is about to get laid off and barely scrapping by.

Repeal this bad, greedy law. Protect our pensions and protect the workers who need promotions and jobs.

Even if they don't repeal I would hope some of these double dippers would have an ounce of ethics to see that they are harming the fund and the younger workers, and do the right thing and quit.

Chief Schultz should open an investigation into the Highland High School school officer who apparently either was AWOL or doesn't have a clue what is going on at his school. If this was just a one time event then I would not have a problem, but these high schoolers were stilling and stealing for months and months. the school detective should have known it and done his job. If he can't figure crime and who is doing them at his school, he needs to be transferred back to the field so he can learn.

it is all about personal responsibility and this detective failed.

Being a lurker at this site, I read a lot about how "bad" Chief Schultz is. I also read the occasional defender of him and how "progressive" he is. Please take a minute and list out things that support your position SO A CITIZEN can understand things; I'm really very curious especially in light of this Manny Aragon scandal...

Anonymous said...

His real name should be Chief Ray Manny Aragon Schultz. He is part of that type of leadership.

Notice how very few defend him, just his ivery tower staff reading this blog. About 4-5 strong is all the support he has on the dept.

Read the past post for all the stuff he has done.

Anonymous said...

Mike Castro….since you are in the position of deputy chief what have you done to better this department. You have no problem getting on this blog to say how progressive the chief is and all the good he has done, well why then are 90% of the posts on this site negative towards him and his administration. Obviously if there is this much dissent on the force that is a direct reflection of your leadership. Who is the deputy chief in charge of the officers taking calls, is there one? In a recent neighborhood association meeting the officers that were present said many of the officers are afraid to do their job because of the lack of support from the top. From a business perspective it sounds like the APD needs to do some serious restructuring and get rid of some of the dead weight around the department, starting at the top. For an officer to be afraid to do their job because of lack of support from their superiors is downright ludicrous. My tax dollars (and there are many of them) pay for this department to operate, stop managing and start leading Chief.

Anonymous said...

this chief is anything BUT a leader. he is constantly violating SOP, Contract, Morality, ... anything to show he has power. he lives through intimidation and lies. if marty has any chance of winning, he needs to get rid of him. DC Castro, if that was your post up ahead.. GIVE ME A BREAK... your spot as a DC was bought and paid for. you cant say you arent a changed man since you got the title of DC. I worked for you long ago and you are so different, no different than any others. When are the DCs going to stand up to the chief and put a stop to his behavior?

Hey 2 up, DC Castro said in this blog that his door is always open, so why didn't you just walk in and speak to him man to man instead of blogging your response anonymously?

It’s a shame that closed minds don’t have closed mouths
Great job Chief and staff
Excellent job field
Tremendous job Detectives

Look around 2%...............you’re missing your a career

A few posts up.. Have youe ever tried to get up to the 5th floor. Chief Ray blocked our entrance with security glass doors. Yes, security doors so the APD Officers just can't walk into an open door to see any chief.

Try to see any of the chiefs? Well, Chief Ray won't even see an officer, return a phone call or email from an officer, muchless talk to one to see how they're doing.

We all know DC Castro wants to be Chief real bad and will try to secure the position if he can during the upcoming Mayor'selection. We already know he and retired Capt debuck are meeting with a certain canidate offering support, and it's not Mayor Chavez.

The Chief and DC Castro tried to screw over the Academy Commander several months back, but the staff stood up against them and told them to put it where the sun doesn't shine. It worked, and the Chief and DC ate crow and went running with their tail between their legs. The Academy staff is everyone's hero! We really respect those guys out there. Nore officers need to stand up against these bullies.

APD needs honest loyal leadership in the worst way!

1. Dislike/blame toward "rehires"
2. Absence of accessibility to
top management
3. Lots of distrust
4. Lots of political innuendo
5. Lots of vitriol

So...supporters of Chief Schultz, step up and tell us specifically why he's been a great chief?

Anonymous said...

Hey Moron, when you go to the doctor, dentist, lawyer or any professional office do you walk right in? The answer is no. You make an appointment and wait until you are called in. APD is a professional organization and you should expect the same. Period. As for security again it is expected. No one should be allowed to walk into anyone’s office without approval. I use to work to work in op’s. Officers would regularly walk right in, go through my desk, read my mail and use my computer. Officers, sergeants and FTO’s were often loud and disruptive; conservations that were overheard were often taken out of context and exaggerated. I wish they limited access when I was there. As for open door policy, it has always been there with every chief, just make an appointment. If you are refused by your chain, go to your union representative, they use to have a standing meeting and I am pretty sure they still do.

Anonymous said...

The reason the majority of the comments against the chief and his staff are negative is because the same two disgruntled officers keep posting over and over and over again.

Most officers dont care and just do the job theyre paid to do.

Anonymous said...

Hey idiot, tried to see the chief, but he never returned ANY of my calls! He did send me a reponse from a third party several weeks later, but I wanted to hear it from him! I wanted him to look me in the eye and tell me, but that never happened.

So, there is no open door policy. I guess he was just too busy or COULD NOT look me in the eye with his reponse. To me, it was a very important question!

i KNOW OF OTHER OFFICERS THAT COULD NOT EVEN GET A RESPONSE FROM THE CHIEF.

Also, if this is a professional organization, why doesn't the 5th floor act that way.

Anonymous said...

It's not the same two Officers blogging. Trust me there are many Officers, Detectives, and Brass who think this Administration sucks. It's one or two DC's defending the Chief on here. Probably on City time too.

Anonymous said...

Steve, You dont work for APD anymore. You retired. Remember.

by the way two posters up.. I get BETTER service from my doctor and dentist then from the chief. Look at how he changed the office around. Its all about power to him. The only reason you get to see him is because you worked up there you idiot. Some of us hard workers are busting our ass out there and the chief is just doing whatever he wants, not caring about hte morale of this department or the well being of its officers.

Anonymous said...

I am a young officer on this dept, so I have not been exposed to other chiefs of police. However, if the current chief is all this dept has to offer, I will be out of here as soon as possible. I have already applied to a federal LE agency and if accepted, will leave. I know a few of my classmates that have also done the same.

We would have liked to have stayed, but this place/administration needs some serious change. It's very sad that grown men can act the way they do and get away with it. Very high schoolish!

As far as more officers on the streets go, I have yet to see any help for calls for service. Where are they?

I hope the next adminstration has alot more to offer, as our morle is really bad and needs to be addressed! However, no one at the top of the current food chain seems to care or take notice.

As for the post stating it's just a few officers that are disgruntled well, that could not be further from the truth. About 98% of the officers on my shift as well as others in our area can't stand this administration and have no respect for them.

How long until citizens start seeing it is the question.

And to above: open door???? just ask the El Vicinos on how he agreed to meet with them , until,"Oh No!,i found out you will have cameras and the whole city will find out what a lying, hypocritical ,corrupt chief i am!" "Don't like it, don't let the door hit you on the way out"

What an imature response! Can't you guys on the 5th floor think of anything better than that. It's that exact attitude that has caused our morale to sink soooo very low. You can offer us as much money as you want, but it does not make up for the piss poor leadership we have!!!!!!

The other poster was correct. You gave us, the new hires a good package, but screwed over all the officers with 10 years or more!

We all just want a leadership that will look after us and our needs and put the dept and officers before their own self interest! We don't have that now!

The 5th floor is only interested in themselfs, not the dept, citizens or officers!

Let me assure you, we will leave, but are smart enough to have another job lined up first.

You all will be gone in a year, even if this mayor wins again. Wait and see how the officers treat you guys after you leave!

I may have only three years on, but I hear remarks not only from my classmates, but the older more experience officers as well. Let me tell you, they have nothing good to say about the chief or his staff.

It really is shocking that this administration does not care about what it's officers concerns are! That's just not a very effective management style. Their response is to leave, rather than address our problems or issues. Like I stated before, very high school from a group of men that are charged with running a police dept! How old are they!

Gentlemen, learn how to fix your problems and address your morale issues. Don't just stick your head in the sand and say they don't exist, they do!

You won't be around long, just one more year. As the young officer indicated. The DC's posting on this site really don't have much to say other than leave. Well, in a year guys, don't let the door hit YOU on the ass on your way OUT!
Oh yes,, in the mean time, try and come up with something new?????? Maybe, just maybe, the four of you up in your ivory tower can think of something new. By the way, you two are the SHORTEST little Deputy Chief's this dept has ever seen. I bet you buy your clothes in the little boy section. It must suck to be so short! What are you guys about 5'4". That is the biggest dam lie I have heard lately from the people that should be looking out for this city's welfare. Please stop thae lying and ask the citizens of Albuq for help.

Few posts up. Ditto, our briefing is real bad also. I agree, where are all the officers that our dept claims we are hiring. Not in the field taking calls. Acting supervisors at all are briefings and the book is full because no one ccan take time off. No officers to shag calls. 1000 officers on APD, no way in hell! Come look at our sub!

John Walsh is in this “job” for one person and that’s John Walsh. I wouldn’t urinate on him if he was on fire. He needs to get a life and go out and get a real job on that’s not handed to him by his buddy ray. Apparently his career path is still status quo…shi^&* field cop, shi$%^ sergeant and he continues with being a shi@#$ PIO.

We continue to get slammed in the field. Where are all those new officers? I know the chief put his buddy DeBuck in a great dayshift job with weekends off. Never worked for the DeBuck when he was here, but others in the command said he was way political and lazy and could not be trusted to look after his officers. At least he did not come back in a supervisor's position, not yet anyhow

Chief, where are all the officers you promised us? You tell the news we are almost at our goal, but we don't see any help in the field taking calls. Where did you put them all? I do continue to see officers retire and not be replaced. Our squads are the smallest I have ever seen, no new officers. Where are they?

Our area command thinks the Presidential recruiting ad was done in extremely poor taste. What mentally deficient person came up with that idea. Must of been one of those height challenged Deputy chiefs. That ad is an embarrassment to the hard working men and women of this department!

All the chief does is fires the bad apples that slip through the recruiters cracks.

Its the recruiting departments fault for not hiring the 1100 officers the mayor wants.

Stop blaming the chief you idiots and start blaming Recruiting supervisors.

The ad was Castro's idea, go figure. Now there is a guy that is as worthless as tits on a boar hog!

He will smile to your face and then stab you in the back the second you turn around. He has always been like that, ask his ex-wife, Michelle. She has had nothing but trouble with him. Hhahahah, the laugh is on him, as she is now much higher in politics than he could ever be. She in Gary King's Chief of staff now and it just burns him up that she is in a much higher position than he is.

I know his bureau can't wait until he leaves. He does them in all the time making dumb ass decisions. The guy is a moron!
He has really hurt APD's standards, he hires anyone just to try and get his numbers.

DC Castro, Capt'n Crunch as we call him, does make some silly ass decisions, but the staff at the academy have him and the chief under control for now. Seems the DC really screwed up over a personel issue which the staff has in a memo to the chief. Since it is a major f@^k up, the chief has made Capt'n Crunch Castro back off, so the dept does not get sued!

They have DC Castro by the short ones, no pun intended. That's how they control him for now!

That guy is a little snake, he will get loose at some time, be careful.

It does suck that he has lowered APD's standards just to hire more officers.

Why do they call Deputy Chief Mike Castro Captain Crunch?

Because DC Castro looks and reminds us of that little cartoon guy on Captain Crunch Cereal. Plus he was a capt at the time we named him.
