Principle

From time to time our vocation gets in the way of our avocation. In fact, we haven't even had the opportunity to watch this week's Presidential Debate. Don't worry, we have it tucked away on TIVO and will be reviewing both candidates performances for ourself.

Apparently, John McCain brought up the idea of adjusting principle amounts for "toxic" loans purchased by the government under the bailout bill. We've been challenged by our readers over the issue and rightly so. Most of the comments went something like this one:
Eye are you planning on ever addressing the fact that McCain directly proposed adjusting mortgage principals to match current market values during the second debate? Do you actually care about this issue or are you just casting about for things to attack Obama/Biden on?

It must make you feel pretty dumb when you go out on a limb to write an attack piece in support of your candidate and then your candidate comes out in favor of and even more extreme version of what you attacked his opponents for, doesn't it?
It's a fair criticism... sort of. The fact is we don't care which candidate or party supports readjusting the principle value of a loan whether that loan is "toxic" or not. Wealth redistribution is wealth redistribution regardless of the party proposing it and regardless of the reasoning behind the move. It's immoral and it's wrong.
(Sidebar)
You'll note that we haven't been blaming either party for the current mortgage debacle. The fact is they both had a hand in Fannie and Freddy's irresponsible trade in "affordable housing" loans - loans that were made to people who could never repay them.

Whether it was President Bush and his "culture of ownership" or Jimmy Carter's affirmative action for loans - government policies directly harmed the financial markets and all of those who were given those "toxic" mortgages.
(End Sidebar)
If the government purchases a "toxic" loan at full value and then lowers the principle, tax payers are giving the mortgage holder not only the difference in principle but the difference in the interest that would have been collected over the life of the loan. To the taxpayer it's an immediate loss followed by a long-term earnings loss - all with the stroke of a politician's pen.

This is the type of "maverick" crap that drives us crazy. McCain is consistently inconsistent and a good portion of the time he betrays his own party in the process. Democrats and Independents have always loved him for it - while conservatives are busy pulling the knife(s) from their backs.

This isn't the first time that we've been on the sharp end of one of McCain's knifes and we're quite sure that it won't be the last. However, McCain's failings don't make Obama fit to be President. Wealth redistribution through government spending and regulation are at the core of Obama's philosophy (or at least at the core of whoever it is that's pulling his strings).
We're going to have to drag Senator McCain over the finish line, and then deal with what he does in the Oval Office. We have to save the country from Obama, and then save it (and the Republican Party) from whoever McCain puts in his cabinet. We're going to have to do it one step at a time. Do not throw in the towel.
If you want "maverick" - McCain is your choice. If you want limited government, restrained spending, and personal freedom - McCain is your only choice despite his propensity to betray each of those principles from time to time.

Our principles on the other hand, will not change. Biden was wrong when proposed resetting principle values. McCain was wrong when he proposed doing the same.

For now it's more important that we save the country and ourselves from a man who would make the biggest corporation in the world, larger, more wasteful, and more intrusive - while taking our money, our liberty, and endangering our lives. Without doubt that man is Barack Hussein Obama - an anathema to liberty and prosperity.

My friends, I am a Maverick. I am for change, my friends. I wish I had my very best friend, Lieberman as my VP, but I sold my soul to Karl Rove instead of being a Maverick, my friends. I have to say Maverick, my friends because I am ashamed to call myself a Republican, my friends.

You write about redistribution of wealth. Do you understand current distribution of wealth or income? I don't ask this in a patronizing way, as I'm not sure I do. When I looked online, here's something I found regarding dist of income, but the info is ten years old- I doubt it's gotten any better, if it's accurate- and I have no idea if it is or not.

If it's real, it certainly conveys memorable proportions.

Four years ago I had an argument with a friend about higher taxes vs. higher cost of living. I argued that I would rather go with Kerry and risk the taxes as opposed to getting hit with an increase in cost of living. Bush won and yeah my taxes didn't really change. My cost of living expenses skyrocketed however and I'm afraid to say we both lost.

McCain could've had my vote but he played to demographics rather than professionalism. Warren Buffet is with Obama and so am I. I can manage taxes and plan accordingly. I have no such luxury with cost of living expenses.

Mega Dittos, Eye. You're a great American.

Limited government over the next 5 to 10 years is not an option. Direct government intervention into many aspects of the banking and corporate world will be necessary for America to muddle through the very tricky situation we find ourselves currently in.

I'm so sad that I finally came to see that the EYE is not who I thought it was. I can't believe that after reading you for a couple years, I now can never read you again. McCain will kill this country and Sarah Palin as the #2, scary. Obama is our only hope to salvage the good ecomonic and socially supported times left by the Clinton administration. I'll miss your thoughts on ABQ, which is the topic you should have stuck to as the EYE ON ABQ and not the EYE ON AMERICA.

Actually ...... My first pick is Ron Paul .... He truely believes the Constitution is still a live document .... I won't waist my vote on someone who is only offering 4 more years repeating the last 8 years of failure ... and at least Obama doesn't have a High school cheerleader running with him! That is embarrassing to us who claim to be part of the republican party.

I had no idea there were people under the age of 70 who take Rush Limbaugh seriously.

Let me see if I can summarize this post: Vote for McCain because he really really sucks in every way imaginable but... Obama is scary for some reason.

Your claim that Obama would decrease personal liberties has no grounding in reality. In matter of fact Bush justice department has been the greatest infringer on personal liberties outside of martial law in the history of Union, and McCain has done nothing to stand up against it.

You claim that Obama's core philosophy is wealth redistribution but you're unable to cite a single example of him advocating it. The Bush administration, on the other hand, has set yearly deficit records in six different years and has more than doubled the national debt, effectively transferring the wealth of the US middle class to companies like Bechtel, Halliburton, Blackwater, and various other military contractors and pharmaceutical companies. McCain acted as a cheerleader for this wealth redistribution every step of the way.

You claim that McCain is for limited government, but Bush has expanded government more than any president since LBJ, particularly through the creation of the worthless Department of Homeland Security (confiscating breast milk from mothers to keep you safe for only $100B/year!) and creating Medicare part D, which tripled the cost of the medicare entitlement. McCain supported him every step of the way.

When are you going to stop believing propaganda from GOP mouthpiece bloviators like Rush Limbaugh? Small government conservatism died in 1985 and has never been practiced since. You even admit in this post that McCain is a liar and untrustworthy yet you still want people to vote for him because... Rush Limbaugh says so? Birds of a feather flock together.

You say that "your principles" will not change, and your "principles" seem to be Goldwater style small-government conservatism. At what point are you going to open your eyes to the fact that the GOP has been lying to you about being in favor of small government since the 1988 election? Why do you continue to vote for a party that only pays lip service to your principles during election season and then ignores them once in office?

If you want the GOP to pursue actual small-government policies you're going to have to vote the current bunch of big government republicans out of office.

Hmmm. Obama was 8 years old when Ayers was a Weatherman. Did he come along on his Big Wheel?

Do you know that they both serve on a board that meets once a year and that the board is funded by Mrs. Anneberg - a REPUBLICAN friend of Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Bush I and Bushie II? Friend and contributor to the Repugs. Why did she appoint Ayers to her foundation? BECAUSE HE WAS A RADICAL SOME 40 YEARS EARLIER.

Now put down your burning crosses and take off your white hoods and robes.

Ooooohhh, ooohhh, ohhh

I got one...

It's a dark and stormy inauguration day 2009. As John McCain takes the oath of office, a key phrase in the oath and his response triggers the Communist brainwash programming that was ingrained in his psyche while imprisioned in Vietnam, like the Manchurian Candidate, right.

He gets all whacky, erratic-like and proposes a bunch of left-wing sounding like programs, like a mortgage bailout program that's even more socialistic than what the liberals have proposed.

So eventually, everybody knows that he's just gone goofy and he's eventually impeached and quietly carted off to the nut farm--but by that time, he's actually done enough things through exectutive orders and stuff to really screw-up the country.

So Sarah Palin takes over, but it turns out her agenda all along was to be a high-ranking plant from the Alaska Independence Party. So she orders the Treasury Secretary, who has enormous financial powers with no congressional oversight, to transfer the remainder of treasuries, cash and gold holdings of the US to Alaska. Setting up the ultimate goal of formally recognizing the independence of the Republic of Alaska.

She then resigns as President of the US to become the first President of Alaska, the mother of the new country, leaving her Vice-President, Mr. Michael Moore as the 46th President of the United States of America.

So remember kids, a vote for McCain is a vote for Michael Moore.

I love these scary stories...

Socialism is a comfortable way to live, I hope you enjoy it.

If everything, EVERYTHING, the right says negative about the chosen one is RAAAACCISSSIM, then everything negative you say about McCain / Palin is either ageism or sexism [ or maybe just anti-veteran]. OR better still, how about, since they are both white, it is also racisim to be negative about them.
Makes as much sense as that nonsense you spewed.

For those that support a fence on the MEXICAN border only and not the Canadian border where the terroists actually came through vote Mcshame.

For those who want to stay in Iraq and continue to spend billions when al qaida laughs from the hills of Pakistan vote Mcshame.

For those who would pick a running mate just because of her gender and not because of her intellect vote Mcshame.

For those who voted for Bush twice and deny it nowadays vote Mcshame.

OK, that's fair. However explain what is going on with the character assassination of Colin Powell by McCain supporters (I'm not even going to call them Republicans...that party is dead)???
