Last week's Eye Poll took up the 1st Congressional District race between Sheriff Darren White and former Councilor Martin Heinrich. In this poll Sheriff White extended his lead over the former councilor by two points resulting in a 16 point lead. 57% of Eye readers preferred Darren White, 41% Martin Heinrich, and 1% didn't know (read this week's poll here).
Several weeks ago we ran the same poll with similar results. Sheriff White led that poll by 14 points with 210 votes registered. Last week's poll registered 50% more votes with only 4 voters undecided (view the previous poll here).
So what's the significance? The 1st Congressional District race is certainly attracting more attention and at least with Eye readers, their choices seem to be already made. In the final analysis, this race will come down to how well each candidate gets their supporters to the polls. A large Obama wave would certainly help Heinrich, but Democratic waves have broken on the rocks of the 1st CD before.
This week we'll take a look at the Wall Street bailout. As you might have surmised, we have serious reservations about the ability of politicians (Republican or Democrat) to effectively fix a situation that they are largely responsible for. We'd like to know what you think about Washington's willingness to spend HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of our tax dollars to buy up loans that shouldn't have been issued in the first place. Don't forget to vote!

Your poll does really count because like you said, it is un-scientific. I think Darren voted for himself some 150 times. But I want the citizens of his district to vote for him so the Sheriff's Dept. can start rebuilding. rebuilding what? a new academy, training, you name it....he screwed it up... Please vote for White so he can screw up your life too!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too bad the general public can't know the truth behind BCSO. Many deputies are afraid to speak out due to retaliation and the younger ones think they can lose their jobs. Darren in Washington....very very scary. At least he'll have new players up there he can walk on and over to get what he wants. They will never see him coming until it's too late. I can't speak about his opponent but I CAN speak about Darren. I work there and I know. By the way, interesting to know Schultz told Sal to keep Todd's shooting quiet (Rest in Peace Todd. We miss you.)as to how it happened. Raise any red flags???
I'm curious as to whether the revelation that Darren White was involved in improperly trying to move up the prosecution of Manny Aragon in order to improve GOP election chances which came out today will make a difference to anyone.
Congress's ineptitude and rampant greed on Wall Street of course have led to this recession we are in, but let's not forgot to point the finger at us citizens. Walking away from mortages, huge credit card debt, overspending and our continued reliance on the automobile have also been contributing factors. There are no innocents here. The government is going to make a mint on this bailout. Essentially they will be buying home notes at steep discounts. Bush's own Attorney General has fingered Sheriff White in the 'playing politics' with the last election. I wonder if anything damaging against him will come out before this election?
