APD’s problems along with Darren White's problems don't look like they're going away anytime soon. Our Eyes kept telling us this evening about a telephone poll asking what the public thought about APD’s take home vehicles being taken away from officers who live the 11 magical miles away from Albuquerque’s Big I. The poll also asked how the public thought White (who may be on TV more than Obama and certainly more than Mayor Berry or Ethel Merman) was doing as the City's Top Cop / firefighter / whatevertheheckheis.
Our "Eyes" tell us the poll went something like this:

This is a five question survey.
Are you aware that Mayor Berry and Darren White have taken away police cars from some of our officers?
Are you aware that police officers living 11 miles away from the Big I have had their take home police car privileges revoked and can no longer use their police vehicles to travel between work and home?
Do you believe it makes the community safer when there is a police car presence in your area?
Do you agree with the policy that revokes take home cars from some of our police officers?
How would you rate the job that Chief Public Safety Director Darren White is doing?
Press: 1 for excellent, 2 for good, 3 for bad, 4 for terrible, 5 no opinion
Maybe the public needs to be asking more questions like what role did White or his wife played in the Ahrensfield case?
Why didn’t TJ Wilham get his car taken away?
Why didn’t White as the quasi-leader of APD offer up his car first?
Why is the “ostrich” type local media not reporting the events at City Hall?
Why, why, why… If you get the answers, pass it on to us here at the Eye.

I would not be opposes to the take home cars if the police were on duty when they had their cars at home. The Los Angeles pd. Are 24x7 if someone knocks on their door they go to assist...
Where is the media? Oh yeah, I forgot. They're all trying to get PIO jobs like TJ's.
Is that how public policy is crafted? By public opinion? Did the city really spend MONEY to do this poll? What a bunch of crap. How 'bout the city does what's right by giving the affected cops time to deal with their gear and AVOiD another punitive damages bearing lawsuit???

even if we aren't on the clock we are cops 24/7. we have to deal with public service incidents on or off duty...most people dont stop at an accident but off duty officers do. i am constantly responding to issues my neighbors have...its a full time job whether im getting paid at the time or not. i need a car to do my job safely and efficiently even off duty.
What's in it for Darren that he taking this 'hard- on' approach with the 34s? You'd expect it from one of the 'never been a cop' pussies like Campbell or Berry.
Ray isn't on board with it.
Speaking of which; there seems to be a divorce brewing between these two. Ray doesn't like to be upstaged by someone less qualified than he.Darren came up in prominence through deception, cheating ans stabbing his way to the top.
Big man on campus is in for a big fall, and it looks as though Ray will come out on top.
Funny how all you cops were slamming Ray over the last few years. Now he is your best buddy and Darren is your enemy. Most of the cops who post here deserve to lose their cars.

Off duty police officers are not prepared to deal with serious in progress incidents that happen in their neighborhood. The best thing they can do is call on duty officers to deal with the situation. A police car in the driveway has nothing to do with it.
Former LAPD here,,still got lots of PD friends. Not sure where you got your info, but they are NOT required to respond 24x7. They respond just like APD does,,,or at least did!

He's pissed off, 'mad dogs' people, has eluded people in public, has restraining orders on him and by recent accounts has lost his temper beyond what is acceptable. Anything but subtle for sure. And this was to be our next Congressman. SERIOUSLY?
I voted excellent in the poll because Darren White should be Chief. Ray could have got rid of the take home cars years ago but didn't because he worked for Chavez. It's time for Ray to go too. Darren is a conservative Christian and tries to do the right thing.

Take the cars away from those outside the 11 mile limit. Take away cars from all city employees too - regardless if they live in the city or not.

Wilham salary is $75,000 AND ramirez has to be close to that.

I know there is a shortage of housing for sale/rent in the 484sq/mi area you are allowed to take your vehicle home to, oh wait, there isn't. Maybe they should give everyone outside the 484sq/mi area a Ford Fiesta patrol car.

Seriously people - where was all of your concern when it was decided that new officers would have to wait a year before they even received a car. Everyone was okay with that because it was only going to affect 30-40 new officers at a time. Maybe other officers should have fought for them!? The fight should have started then…
Why does the dwi Sgt who clearly lives outside the 11 miles get to take his car home. Commander Garcia can you let us knoW.Also, the excuse of being on call doesn't count, or he makes up his own on call schedule.
