The Piercing Truth

This is right from the dictionary and seems to describe Albuquerque, Berry and Schultz. Fascism (f ash ,izem) noun An authoritarian right wing system of government and/or social organization. (in general use) extreme right wing, authoritarian, chauvinistic and/or intolerant views or practices. Fascism tends to include a belief in the supremacy of one group over another, national, ethnic, especially social strata or monetarily; a contempt for democracy, an insistence on obedience to a powerful leader, and a strong demagogic approach. APOA Members Offer to Lay Down the Thunder

The members have spoken. Tonight The APOA (Albuquerque Police Officers Association) held an emergency meeting for its members. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the current situation with the take home car policy. The officers are upset and angry their cars have been pulled. This left many to wonder, why all of a sudden? Why doesn’t the City see the benefits a take home car provides? Why can’t the City Council see that it actually costs more for the City not have take home cars? Does the City realize the barrage of lawsuits and challenges this change in policy has opened? This also made many wonder whom exactly was spearheading this change in policy? The loss of the take home cars are taxing on the officers and introduces safety issues for the officers. Our Eyes tell us that the person who is likely responsible for pulling the cars is; you guessed it again, Darren White. In fact, our Eyes tell us that while Chief Ray Schultz was ready to provide City Councilors with the logistics and benefits of the take home car policy (at the last council meeting); White gave “Schultzie” a direct order not to talk about it; not to present his documented information he had sitting on his lap. If this is true the Eye gives it’s commendations to Chief Schultz. It was at that time that Chief Schultz walked out of the meeting. Who exactly is responsible for the officers and equipment of the Police Department? Could it be true that White actually controls everything by proxy (Where is Mayor Berry)?

As it appears, the men and women of the Department have finally stood up to this dictatorial tyrant. A motion was made at this meeting for a “Vote of No Confidence” against Darren White. This would be huge; but nothing new to White. New Mexico State Police did a “Vote of No Confidence” against White on September 27, 1999. It was reported that 89 percent of the New Mexico State Police had “NO Confidence” in White. It appeared at this emergency meeting that almost 100 percent of those in attendance have “No Confidence” in their proxy leader, Darren White. It appears that the resounding lack of confidence was emanated by all ranks: rookies, veterans, detectives, and supervisors. In accordance with the APOA By-Laws, the motion was tabled for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, all APOA members will be allowed to vote on the motion. Will this be “the straw that broke the camel’s back”?

If the Mayor wants the City functioning properly, take out the proxy block and let the Chief of Police; be the Chief. This will allow the officers to do their jobs. Otherwise, why pay for a public safety director and a chief; when the chief doesn’t possess the legitimate power or autonomy to run the Department. To the City Council; here is your opportunity to voice the “Publics Will.” This is the part of the reason your constituents voted you in to office. Stand up and right the wrong.

*For your entertainment at the top of this story is a picture of a bumper sticker that was being passed around at the APOA Meeting. COmpliments of one of our Eyes.

If this is true, Schultz should resign for not standing up (I doubt it is true).

As a citizen,I say the APOA doesn't get it. All the citizens want are the cars kept inside the city limits and used for police work only. Is that so hard?

Tijeras, Los Lunas, Belen, Rio Rancho, don't pay for these cars, so they shouldn't get them.

As for your comment about the city council. The citizens have spoken and the council has heard, kinda of. We want the cars within the city limits and for police use only. This 11 mile thing is stupid. Make it city limits for police. Take the take home cars away from all other city workers.

The APOA is steadily losing public support. They just don't seem to want to help in this bad economy. It is all about me me me. Well you are now in court for your pay raises (good luck on that). You are now in court for the take home cars (good luck with that too). I urge the council and mayor to take police cars from all who are outside the city limits. Take them from all other city employees period.

And please, APOA, don't whine on TV about how this is dangerous to public safety. The majority of police cars are unmarked. The percentage of fully marked cars is way below the number of cars driven by the Chief, DCOP, Commanders, LTs, Detectives, etc.

There is one bright side to all of this. I would sure like to see the APOA attorney offer stock. He / she seems to be making a heck of a lot of money.

Darren "White Lies"

In addition to another story about corruption in New Mexico ("Bid Rigging Alleged at Pit"), the front page of the Albuquerque Journal also ran the following this morning: "Mayor's Office Slams APD Union. Undercover Cops Exposed In Lawsuit, Safety Chief Says" More than anything else the city's Chief Media Bore may have done to date it exposes the real Darren White for those willing to dig into the muddled reporting of Dan McKay, a Journal reporter who is also auditioning for one of those high-paying PIO gigs with the administration.

Joey Sigala, who in a rare demonstration of actually doing his job and fighting for the men and women of APD, filed a lawsuit against the city for revoking the take-home car privileges of approximately 150 officers.

Anonymous said...

Attached to the APOA lawsuit is a list of the affected officers who had to turn in their take-home vehicles because they live outside the magic 11 mile circle from the Big I that, in the view of Mayor Berry and his hanger-ons, comprises the city boundaries of Albuquerque.

Reading this morning's story, the public is led to believe that Joey and APOA created this list, a list that White calls "incredibly dangerous" and that they were just putting officers names and addresses out there wily-nily for any criminal to get a hold of. Buried in the second to last paragraph comes the information that this list was CREATED BY THE ADMINISTRATION. Also in the story is the fact that the list of officers IS UNDER A COURT ORDERED SEAL (much like the restraining order on Darren as a result of his second divorce). A seal that was agreed to by APOA. However, that seal only affects the court case. Because the administration created a list of officers they also created a public document that anyone can request and obtain through the Inspection of Public Records Act.

Anonymous said...

After giving T.J. Wilham his own police vehicle, the Berry Administration decides the city is broke and any APD officer living outside an 11 mile radius from the Big I isn't a part of the Magic Kingdom and must turn their take home vehicles in order to save the city money. They put together a list of officers that have to turn their vehicles in. That list is circulated throughout APD and is delivered to APOA. APOA attaches the list to its lawsuit as evidence of the number of officers being affected by the contract breach.
Darren White then runs off to the media screaming that the list (which he helped produce) is "incredibly dangerous" and APOA "might have exposed officers and their families to retailiation from people arrested by or others upset with the police" all the while knowing the list couldn't be obtained through the APOA court filing because it was sealed.

Ladies and gentlemen, slowly but surely we're getting to see the real Darren White: a media whore willing to do anything to get his name and mug in the paper even if it means telling "white lies" about the public safety men and women he's supposed to be leading. Just don't ask him about Brad Ahrensfield and Peaches.

City council needs to demand the immediate resignation of Darren White, who has extended his lies from a Federal Courtroom to the floors of the city council hall. He has stood in front of the councilors and lied to them like it was nothing. He will stop at nothing to promote his political position.

Anonymous said...

Well, it’s happened again. Director for Public Safety Darren White, got all suited up and went on television last night saying the names on the attachment put the officers at risk if the list fell into the ”wrong hands.”
Be afraid! White summoned his best I’m afraid, voice to try to scare everybody within earshot.
In his best post 911 speech he spewed his rhetoric. The city got the judge to seal the list of attached names and addresses.
White doesn’t study history; he just makes it up as he goes along.

If a cop has a take-home marked car, don't the neighbors already know he or she is a cop?

If it's an unmarked car, where is the deterrent value of having it in the neighborhood and on the way to work?

And there's this part of the article:
"APOA President Joey Sigala said officers' names and addresses are already public information that can be requested by anyone through the Inspection of Public Records Act.

To all of yoy that think it is a good idea that the cops lose their cars , let me say that when my 16year old daughters car broke down on her way home and no one would stop to help her, it was an off duty POLICE OFFICER who stopped to help her, blocking traffic with her Police car so the female oficer could keep my daughter safe while that officer got my daughters tire changed and got her home safely. Be careful what you wish for , this I know is just a small example but IT was huge to my daughter and our family.

THERE WERE MANY OFF - DUTY OFFICERS THAT RESPONDED TO SHOOTING AT M-CORE. MANY RECEIVED PHONE CALLS TO RESPOND, MANY HEARD WHAT WAS GOING ON ,BY RADIO. THE FACT IS MANY RESPONDED OFF DUTY, THEY ALL HAD POLICE CARS SO THEY COULD DO THAT. WHEN THE NEXT M-CORE HAPPENS AND THERE IS NOT ENOUGH OFFICERS TO RESPOND, YOU BETTER HOPE THAT ITS NOT YOU OR SOMEONE YOU LOVE IN HARMS WAY.

A vote of no confidence makes us look like we are 5 year olds who got mad because mom and dad took our toys away. This is bad PR. If we want to sue, then sue. But don't alienate us from the citizens. Most of them want the cars held to city limits. They want them only used for police work.

That's it? You have nothing more to say than to call people names? How about explaining why the citizens should pay for cars out of the city limits? How about explaining how the officers have ruined this for themselves by abusing this program (from the chief on down). This is what is wrong with the APOA, they can't defend the cars outside the city, so they resort to name calling. Great job heroes, you make us so proud, not.

Ok; we have the mayor on the front page talking about providing $500k to shelter 75 homeless people. That's admirable given the freezing temperatures and we as a civilized society should do something to help these unfortunates.
Question; where is that $500K coming from?
According to Darren and the rest of the administration hacks, the city will save $600K when they take the 160 cars away. Be nice if the public could see the devil in those details.

When the Twin Towers went down there were thousands of off duty cops and firemen who responded. They drove down there in their own cars, most didn't have take home cars.

You all have to stop the fearmongering. The public is taking a beating with the economy and it just doesn't resonate anymore.

It is a sad day when someone puts a price on safety and someones life. Where is the mention of the 100's of officers from other jurisdictions that drive into Albuquerque every day. I am thankful when one of those guys stops to make sure I am O.K., as I am sure they are thankful when an APD unit stops and checks on them. This is a win/win situation in all the communities in the Albuquerque metropolitan area.

Mr. White, if you would have spent any time on the streets you would understand why this is such a huge and emotional issue. When an officer dies and that life may have been saved if only an off-duty officer would have been in uniform driving to work but was not, are you going to paste your mug on the TV apologizing to the family why you are solely responsible for that death.

Where is the mention that the APOA offered to offset the extra (very small mind you) cost that this is to the tax payers. What this comes down to is a game. I for one do not and will not tolerate my life being jeopardized because some clown wants to make a name for himself.

GIVE THESE OFFICERS THEIR CARS BACK!!!! THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR YOU, MR. WHITE, TO BE TAKING THESE ACTIONS. SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!

This is Paul J.Heh: It is a sad state of affairs when I after all the years with A.P.D. have to attend a A.P.O.A. with the purpose of making a motion of NO CONFIDENCE AGAINST DARREN WHITE. This is not something that I rushed into, alot of thought went into it, and I was hopeing the situation would resolve itself and Darren would realize he had made a huge mistake. My main concerns were for the citizens that I am sworn to protect. I have never driven my car off duty not even to court, however on countlees times I have stopped to help citizens that have had vehicle problems, changing tires for them, buying gas for them, even following them to the gas station and filling their tank for them because I realized that this person was really down on their luck.I have stopped to back up officers both from A.P.D and other agencies that needed help right now. I have been involved in major arrests all while driving to and from watch. I am but one officer that believes that the badge I have worn for the last 24 years does not belong to me, that badge belongs to the citizens of Albuquerque and they let me ware it as long as I ware it with respect and honor. There is no magic 11 miles to the area I serve my oath does not say anything about stop being a police officer after 11 miles. I am but one person, multiply me by 1000 A.P.D. Officers. My second reason for the motion is for the respect I have for all A.P.D. Officers weather you like me, agree with me or not I have always been there for you putting my life on the line as you have done for me. In closing what happens to me for making the motion matters little.

As a taxpayer I don't want to pay for cops driving to the east mountains, Los Lunas or other communities outside the city. Those that were driving to these far off communities contribute nothing to the citizens of ABQ in the way of assistance noted by some comments above. I would also say the same for city employees. Most should not have cars. There is such thing as mileage rates to reimburse those who occasionally use their cars for official purposes. Take home cars in most instances is a taxpayer burden, not a benefit.

We are talking only 150 cops. They should quit if they don't like the policy. Cops need to come down off their "union" provided gravy train.

The take home car benefit is a huge aspect with recruiting. Many officers left their towns to come here, based on the fact that the take home car policy was a huge convenience for them. It is still used as a recruiting tool

Anonymous said...

This blog should have been titled,

APOA Members Lay Down the WHINE!

The cars may have been used as a recruiting tool, but the MOU regarding the cars was always clear. The chief can change it. If you came here just for the take home car and you live outside the limit, you will have to deal with it. The days of entitlements are over. The APOA has lost it's grip on city hall, and certainly lost the support of the public.

As an Officer who lost his take home vehicle I must say I dont mind driving my own vehicle to work everyday. As long as the department provides the proper security and parking for my pov and accommodations for weapons and dressing out each day. After one week of driving my POV it is obvious these things will not be provided.

I'm sure that the taxpayers out there complaining about the take home cars work for free themselves. They wouldn't care if their employer cut their pay, totally disregarding a valid contact. And then start to cut other job benefits. Hell let's not pay officers anything and cut the few benefits that they do have.

We will still have the privilege of serving assholes like you every day.

Im sure we will find plenty of people to fill the ranks for nothing. APD has never had trouble finding enough people.

That's why we are only down about 400 officers then FBI numbers say we should have with a city of our size.

Anonymous said...

To the poster at 2:48,

Read your contract. The Chief can change it at any time, with 45 day notice. What don't you understand about that? Far more citizens have lost their homes, 401k plans, etc, so for you to cry about the cars (which the chief has followed the contract on) is really immature. I would hope you quit, because the public does not need assholes, such as you, pretending to serve us. You feel very entitled about everything, this is why the APOA is viewed as being a bunch of whiners. By the way, APD is at maximum staffing as provided for by the city council budget. The FBI numbers are not the budget numbers. With unemployment so high, please quit so we can get a good person in to take you place. One who understands the contracts and does not feel so entitled.

I forgot how entertaining this site is. First of all a couple of weeks ago while at lunch I overheard your chief, darrin, TJ, and several other within that click talking about the posts you guys put on this site. They were laughing at you folks, those of you who are nagging about all of the things the city is taking from you. They said you guys are too busy bitching that they can slip anything they want through, right under your noses. I think their disrespect towards the officers was a disgrace and quiet embarrasing. however, you guys bitching on a website about this matter is even more embarrasing. should we compare you losing your cars to those civilians who have lost their jobs, and subsequently their houses??, Lets look at your take home cars. I have phisically counted over twenty times in one month where I have seen people broke down on the side of the road here in albuquerque, and they were flagging off duty police officers down and those officers, while talking on his/her cell just drove on by. I myself stopped to help those who I was able to. I personally party with some of the detectives who actually take their undervocer cars to the bar with them, drink (a lot) and then drive home intoxicated. If you want to be treated with respect and as professionals, then act respectful and professional. If not keep typing stupid stuff on this site, because some of us to include those fools who lead your department need something to laugh about over lunch.

The media won't go after White because he's been their Deep Throat for years ratting out and making stuff up about people like Brad Ahrensfield for god knows how long. They feel like they owe White for being such a good source. That's part of the reason they pulled down the stories linking him to the Ahrensfield case (which is what the no-confidence vote should be about) and why they won't cover this. In the media's eyes, White is one of their guys. They're right. His true loyalty is to them and keeping them happy. We're just a way for him to do that.

The Jester and the Con Man.

Lets take a look at a few things. Public perception right now is that Cops are whining thats from someone outside looking in. I feel you have every right to feel mislead by the Jester "Darren" but the Con Man is the Chief. Will the vote of no confidence help probably not, just make you look well like whiners. Why is the Chief the Con man well it is like this, he will sit back and watch you all pound at Darren and collect his $149+K and then say oh I had a plan to keep the cars. BS it is a pretty savy move, Darren makes $20K less and believes he runs APD and AFD and Schultz tells him how great he is. Why? He gets no heat because he knows Darren will be blamed and he laughs all the way to the bank. Don't forget Schultz learned from the best Marty and that is keep a fall guy close and you can always save yourself. Darren does not even realize he was conned. Your Chief did'nt need the support of the field he just had to keep telling DW how great he was so he would sell Berry on keeping him. Let the public know. What I hear from my friends at AFD their Chief is no better. They say he is afraid to make a decision without DW blessing it which is actually funny because I don't believe DW even knows anything about the Fire Service. Tell the public the best way to save us taxpayers some money is get rid of both Chief's for a $280K savings or get rid of that ridiculous position that was created by Marty for his buddy and save $130K. If the Mayor were smart he would clean the cabinet and start again by first eliminating the wasteful position DW occupies and maybe re-evaluating his Police and Fire Chief. This city needs strong leadership not yes men if we hope to turn things around. Will it be easy no but the public will respect those who can make tough decisions without having to call the media every time for the pat on the back. Give the public something they can take and run with like saving $280K or $130K, a vote of no confidence means nothing to John Q! Lets just save our $300K and let DW run them both for $130K.

Anonymous said...

The stupidity is your comment about "who made darren king". Do any of you fools read your contract? Darren is in charge of Public Safety. The Chief is in charge of the department. As a taxpayer, I find it interesting that (from the knowledge of information shared on this blog) many of the "anonymous posters" are APD/AFD. Do you have no faith in our public service system? Why is it that you are keeping such tight track of certain individuals and their significant others/wives/coworkers? Following them around, taking notes, listing names of friends and business locations visited? Are you on the clock and in YOUR city vehicle? Is this what my tax dollars are paying for now? I know some of the individuals that are under attack and have to say that proving some of the personally damaging allegations will be difficult, as they cannot be farther from the truth. From a frustrated taxpayer.

Anonymous said...

Let me break this down for you as simply as I can.

The mayor is the top dog. The public safety director is next (regarding public safety). Then comes the Chief of Police and Chief of Fire. That means that the Chiefs work and take direction from the Public Safety Director and Mayor. The contract allows for the Chief to change the take home car program with 45 day notice. He did all of this. I just don't get all this anger directed toward the Chief, Public Safety Director or Mayor. They are well within in their rights, as signed by the APOA in the contract. They followed every rule and they are allowed to make the rules. Somebody has to be the top dog (s). Your whining is making all of the citizens ears bleed.

What is with these Albuquerque "citizens" who all of a sudden don't want to pay for APD officers who live outside the city limits? They still are working to protect YOU and YOUR family when you are at home safely sleeping. Just because they are using their car to drive to and from work outside of the 11 mile radius doesn't make them any less of an officer that was sworn in to protect the citizens of Albuquerque. Yeah of course millions of people have to drive in their personal cars to work, but wake up the take home car was a benefit, just like the rest of us get benefits with our jobs. One last thing for those who think the officers who drive into town from Edgewood or Los Lunas your WRONG! My fiance, who USED to drive to and from Los Lunas in his car was always flagged down on the freeway on his way to work. So enough of this "we don't want to pay for officers who do their job here in town, but drive outside the limits." You "citizens" who don't see the big picture will when you realize your paying more in lawsuits, secure places to park etc, then you would for the take home cars.

Jason B. said...

There are certainly two sides to this story. I am a civilian not associated with LE other than some friends. I have talked to them about the cars and almost all agreed that the problem came from certain officers abusing the use of the cars after hours.

Most told me that they had never done so, but then I realized I have a friend who's an insurance adjuster who uses his company car for everything. His company knows and doesn't care - it's part of his overall compensation. Then I thought of other civilian friends who have company vehicles, and it is the same. Above all, their companies get no off-duty service from these employees. Hmmm.

There is always a waste of money in government, and there is always plenty of "fat" to cut. This $600k savings will not help us one bit - a drop in the bucket. It is obviously political, and I as a civilian believe it does not benefit me one bit. Update the rules as to when a vehicle can be used off-duty, and leave it be. I wasn't gonna get a tax cut from it anyway.

Thanks to all you officers who keep me and my family safe - there are people out there who really do appreciate it.

WHEN THEY QUIT, YOU CAN SPEND ALL THAT MONEY YOU SAVE PAYING THEIR SALARIES PITTING UP STEEL DOORS, BUYING GUNS, INSTALLING BURGLAR ALARMS, AND BUYING YOUR WIFE TITANIUM CHASTITY PANTIES, BECAUSE A LITTLE BITCH LIKE YOU CAN'T EVEN PROTECT YOUR CHEESEBURGER.

Whine Whine Whine, I can't come up with a good arguement for keeping these cars outside of the city limits, so instead I will whine, name call, and throw a fit.

This is why you lost the right to the take home cars. Grow up.

Why is schultz getting a free ride? He started this years ago for those of you who don't remember, ask around. We need a new chief he has worn out his 8 or how ever many years he has been here. At some point you become uneffective.

Let me say that originally, the take home cars were to increase the presence of marked units in response to the public's complaint about increased crime. It worked. Then the city decided to use it as a bargaining tool and called it a benefit. When it was difficult to get good candidates for the police department, it was used as a recruiting tool.

To those that say they do not want "their" tax dollars going to officers who live outside the 11 miles really believe that "their" tax dollars are totally supporting the City of Albq. The City of Albq has businesses which these outside areas do not and a large majority of purchases are made in Albq, so they do support the City of Albq by paying the high taxes and getting no benefits so why not have at least a marked unit visible outside the area to deter crime.

I would say get rid of all the take home cars and let the public then complaint because they could never find a cop except those that are on duty and they are all too busy with other calls for service.

Give all the officers a pay increase for the value of the vehicles. If the loss of the take home cars for 180 officers will save the city $650K, then those officers could get a $3600/year raise and they wouldn't be required to do their job until they get to the office and pick up a piece of junk police car that has been abused by someone who has no ties to that partucular unit.

We're going in the wrong direction. As an earlier poster indicates, how do you put a price on someone's life or safety. I know for a fact that my family members have been helped by off duty officers traveling home late a night on an isolated road between Albq & their home and it is very comforting to know that someone is their to help them that can be trusted.

To all of you that disagree, time will tell so don't whine when you or your family member is affected by "where are the cops when you need them"?

TO "ANGRY"

You need to look for another job as it seems you think the taxpayer works for you. Most of us civilians figured out years ago that the APD was incapable of protecting us or our homes so many of us have invested in protective measures.

Cops are a dime a dozen, best you seek employment elsewhere.

NO to all take home cars. NO to city employees with take home cars.

Take away all take home cars. You see cops doing all their personal errands in them anyways. No uniform, just wasting city gas($$$). The list of perks that cops have goes on and on. For what? To hire someone with a GED who wants to abuse their authority by waving their gun around for $50,000 a year? My friend pays around $50 a month just to park in a city owned parking lot. Fair? A lot less fair than a take home car with unlimited fuel to cruise around in.

Let me know where I can be a cop for 50K a year. IM THERE! Certainly not APD or NMSP or BCSO

Face it, there are hundreds of city cops who would not stop for a flat tire unless the driver was a good looking girl or they were making overtime. Instead of whining like a bunch of little kids, work on how the public looks at all of you! The general public could care less about cops taking cars home or any other LE benefits.
